Using Group Pages

The group page works as an independent classroom in canvas. Here you can share files with each other, send messages and create pages together all via the group menu on your left. Only the people in the group and the teacher have access to the group page.

1. Homepage

On the homepage you will get an overview of the group like you would on your course. You can also see the latest activity and events.

2. Announcements

You can send messages to all students and teachers within the group through 'Announcements'. The announcement will be shown on the homepage (see above picture) and is easily accessible for everyone in the group to see. Please observe that all messages will show up as notifications (depending on your individual notification settings) and that these can be seen by your teachers.   To make an announcement, simply click on 'Announcements' underneath the group menu and click on '+ Announcement', or do it directly from the homepage.

3. Pages

Within your group you can create pages that you can fill with texts, photos, films, links and so on. This could be a good way to work together and distribute information to everybody in the group. Anybody can open a page by clicking on '+Page'. When the page has been created anyone in the group can edit the page and continue working on it. You can only be one person actively working on any one page at a time.

4. People

Under the tab 'People' you will see which group members and teachers are part of your group.

5. Discussions

Join or create a discussion by clicking on '+Discussion' in the right hand corner. Group discussion pages work in the same way as regular discussion pages. For more information about discussion pages click here.

Share files and documents with everyone in the group by dragging and dropping files directly into your page, or click on the 'Upload' button in the right hand corner.

7. Conferences

Conferences is a video conferencing tool that can be used to hold a meeting with your group. Conferences is not recommended for use as it has a low capacity and therefore is better suited to small meeting groups. Instead we recommend the use of  Zoom or Teams.

8. Collaborations

The collaborations functions allows multiple students to edit a document via Google Docs. For this to work everybody in the group must have a Google account, which every LU student automatically received via their student account. Permission must then be given to Canvas to use Google Docs, this is done by clicking on 'Allow access to Google Drive' at the bottom of the page. To get started you then click on 'Start Collaboration'. This is the same procedure as for regular google docs sharing, the only difference being that the file you are writing in will be easily accessible via Canvas. Once you have clicked on 'Start Collaboration', a new tab will be opened containing the document.
