Security Settings - An Overview
On this page you find information concerning the most basic security options in Zoom. We recommend that you always have at least one of these options activated, but depending on the purpose of your meeting and whom the participants might be, you may have to activate or deactivate one or several of the options.
-
Three Security Options
There are three primary security options that you can use. These are "Passcode", "Waiting Room" and "Require authentication to join", and are available to use both for scheduled/recurring meetings and meetings in your personal meeting room. You find these options in the section "Security" when you schedule a meeting or edit your personal meeting room:
-
1. Passcode
By activating the security option "Passcode", the participants will not only need a meeting ID to join your Zoom meeting, but also a passcode. Read more about when and how it is suitable to use this option on the page Creating Secure Meeting Spaces with External Participants.
-
2. Waiting Room
If you choose the option "Waiting Room", the participants will not be able to go directly into your meeting, but will instead first enter a so called waiting room. The host and co-hosts can then manually allow the participants in the waiting room to enter the meeting by doing the following:
When a participant enters the waiting room, the host and co-hosts will be notified, and by clicking on "Admit" the participant will be let into the meeting.
-
If you as a host/co-host want a better overview to manage the participants in the waiting room, you click on "Participants" in the meeting toolbar:
-
In the list of participants, you can see and do the following:
1. See who and how many participants that are in the waiting room.
2. Click on "Admit" allowing the participant to enter the meeting.
3. If you do not want to admit a participant, click on "Remove".
4. If you want to send messages to the participants in the waiting room, use the button "Message".
-
N.B. If you choose to use a waiting room, both employees and students of LU - that have logged in correctly - will bypass the waiting room and enter the meeting directly. You can change this and other settings in your personal settings Links to an external site. in LU Zoom.
-
3. Require Authentication to Join
If you activate the security option "Require authentication to join", the participants must log in to Zoom to be able to participate in the meeting. Read more about when and how it is suitable to use this option on the page Creating Safe Meeting Spaces for You and Your Students/Colleagues at LU.

Require that All Meetings Are Secured with One Security Option
We also recommend that you go to your personal settings in LU Zoom and activate the security setting "Require that all meetings are secured with one security option". By doing so, the following will happen or be required:
- When you schedule a meeting, you MUST activate at least one of the three security options "Passcode", "Waiting Room" or "Require authentication to join", otherwise you will not be able to save the meeting.
- Your personal meeting room MUST have at least one security option activated.
- If you have already scheduled meetings without activating any of the security options, all of these meetings will be automatically secured with a waiting room. This also applies to your personal meeting room.
In order to activate this security setting, log in to https://lu-se.zoom.us/ Links to an external site. and do the following steps:
1. Click on "Settings Links to an external site." in the left menu.
2. Click on the tab called "Meeting".
3. Go to the section "Security".
4. Locate and activate the setting "Require that all meetings are secured with one security option".
