Passport and Documentation

Due to the border control between Sweden and Denmark, it is important that all students bring their valid passports, and this includes EU/EEA citizen.

We recommend having hard copies of documentation that help prove that you will study at Lund University and any vaccination documents. To show you will live and study in Sweden, you might bring documents from the Swedish Migration Agency, your Letter of Acceptance/Notification of Selection Results, housing contracts, etc.

By train

Travelling by train in Europe is the most environmentally friendly option to get to Lund University.

Malmö, Lund and Helsingborg can all be reached with the local commuter train, “Öresundståg” which departs from Copenhagen Central Station.

Travelling time from Copenhagen Central Station to:

Malmö Central Station is about 40 minutes.
Lund Central Station is about 55 minutes.
Helsingborg is about 1.5 hours.

Travel time from Stockholm to Lund is about 4 hours on the fast train or 6–7 hours on “Intercity” trains. Trains run regularly from Gothenburg to Lund and take approx. 2.5–3.5 hours. One can also travel on overnight trains from Berlin and Hamburg.

Booking international train tickets in Europe involves combining different national providers. If your trip to or from Lund involves travelling for more than one day or crossing multiple countries, the most flexible option for your trip is with Interrail/Eurail at a fixed price. By Bus

There are many connections to Lund, Malmö and Copenhagen by bus, which is cheaper than the train in many cases, but also requires more time. There are some connections from and to Lund directly, but you increase your connection options when also searching to/from Malmö and Copenhagen. There are some connections where the bus can compete with the train in terms of speed, such as to Oslo or Berlin. Good to know: Trying to combine bus and train can be risky when it comes to delays and missing connections. In this case, we recommend booking only one provider to have a guaranteed alternative option or leave at least one hour, preferably two, between transfers to allow for delays.

From Copenhagen Airport CPH/Kastrup

Copenhagen Airport, CPH, at Kastrup in Denmark, is the largest international airport closest to Lund. Landing at Kastrup airport means entering Denmark and persons of some nationalities will need a Danish transit visa. Please remember to check with the Danish Embassy/Consulate in your home country if you need a transit visa to Denmark or if a Schengen visa is enough.

By train you can conveniently reach Lund, Malmö and Helsingborg directly from the Copenhagen Kastrup Airport. Please note that you have to buy the ticket before you board the train.

From Malmö Airport MMX/Sturup

The local airport Malmö-Sturup, MMX, has frequent domestic flights mainly from Stockholm, but also international flights from for example London, Warsaw, Salzburg, and Budapest. The taxi companies operating at the airport have set prices for journeys between the airport and Lund as well as other destinations. The price to Lund by taxi should not cost more than SEK 500 at any time of day or night. The price should be settled with the driver beforehand.

By Car

There are car and passenger ferry connections, operated by different companies, to southern Sweden from Germany and Poland.

To travel by car over the Öresund Bridge from Denmark costs approximately 700 SEK one way, per car. Lund is conveniently reached from the main highways E6 and E22. It takes approx. 30 minutes to travel by car to Lund from the Öresunds Bridge and 1 hour from the bridge to Helsingborg on highway E6 and E20. Students travelling to Helsingborg can also enter Sweden by the ferry operating between Helsingborg and Helsingör.

Travelling by car is less sustainable than the train or bus, however, it is a more sustainable option compared to taking the plane. By increasing the number of people in your car, the carbon footprint will decrease and your trip will be more social and more sustainable. With carpooling, you can save money as a driver or find a cheap ride as a passenger whilst also reducing emissions. There are various websites where you can search for carpooling as well as several Facebook groups, e.g. for international students (in Lund or Sweden), where you can insert your ride.

By Ferries

The Baltic Sea connects Sweden with Germany, Poland, the Baltic States, and Finland. Some trips are overnight, whilst others are surprisingly quick, such as the ferry that connects Ystad (Sweden) with Sassnitz (Germany) in only 2.5 hours. Taking the ferry might also make your trip by car to/from Lund easier and cheaper. Harbours of interest might be Trelleborg, Ystad, Helsingborg and Malmö.

Interrail/Eurail: There are many ferries you can use with the Interrail/Eurail ticket, connecting Sweden with the Baltic States, Poland or Germany. Eurail Passes allow access to several discounted European ferry routes and boats.

By Taxi

Malmö to Lund by taxi is approximate 350 SEK for a group of 1–4 passengers and only small variations from that should be accepted. The trip takes about 20 minutes. The Swedish taxi market is free and most companies have recommended prices for defined routes (such as Sturup-Lund). Taxis in Sweden can be ordered in advance or found at taxi stops usually situated just outside stations, harbours, etc. Hailing them in the street sometimes works but it is not the normal routine. Taxis normally accept all major credit cards.

Travelling grants for Erasmus + Mobility Programme

As an exchange student within the Erasmus + mobility programme, you might be entitled with a travel grant to and from your study destination. The grant only covers sustainable trips. Check with the International Office at your home university to see if you are entitled the grant.
