Using GenAI in your own examination preparation

As we discussed in module 1, there are some tasks which GenAI tools might be good at: generating ideas, comparing and summarising texts, changing the tone of writing, creating lists and plans, and so on. You could harness these tools to help you to create new examination tasks and grading rubrics. For instance, you could use a GenAI tools such as Bing CoPilot Chat in the same way that you might ask a colleague to peer review a set of examination instruction, checking for readability or that all requirements are clear. The following pages include some activities for designing marking rubrics, feedback statements and multiple-choice questions, all of which might save you time.

I am often asked if it is possible to use GenAI tools to grade student work. This is something I definitely don't recommend in higher education. The reasons are laid out in this (slightly grumpy) post on my blog Links to an external site., but in short, I think it's really important that you, a human, review student progress in your course, and this means making complex critical judgements in the context of your own course.
