Scientific Communication III - The Talk, 1 credit

This course syllabus was confirmed by The Research Programmes Board at the Faculty of Science 12 June 2023. The course is in the third cycle and amounts to 1 credit.
Learning outcomes
The course provides the participants with knowledge how to present a clear and engaging research talk (10-15 minutes in length).
On completion of the course, participants shall be able to:
Knowledge and understanding
- Account for the basics of scientific communication
- Describe how to plan, design and execute a research talk where the research is presented in a clear and thought-through manner reflecting the participants own personal communication style
- Obtaining knowledge on the ongoing research within the research topic/department
Competens and skills
- Planing, designing and present a research talk (10-15 minutes in length)
- Analysing other research talks and critically review content and presentation
- Further develop the participants own personal communication style and acquire more confidence as a speaker
Judgement and approach
- Critically review and determine how to present research in a clear and thought-through manner
- Analysing the presenter´s own presentation technique
Course content
- Further introduction to the field of scientific communication
- Obtaining practical knowledge about scientific communication
- Plan, design and execute a research talk
- Critical review of other research talks
- Active exchange of knowledge about current research within the research topic/department
Forms of instructions
Teaching consists of lectures, interactive seminars, individual work, work in smaller groups and a final conference.
Each participant designs a research talk (10-15 minutes in length) in English. The talks are performed and peer reviewed in smaller groups (ca 4-5 people) and improved. The process is repeated. The talks are then presented for a larger audience at a conference to young scientists.
Forms of assessment
The assessment is based on each participant presenting a research talk, composed by the participant. In addition, active participation in smaller groups for the peer review process of the other participants’ talks is obligatory.y.
Grades
Possible grades are Pass and Fail. For a grade of Pass, the student must have met all the assessment criteria above.
Language of instruction
If at least one participant is not Swedish speaking, this course will be given in English. Otherwise, it will be given in Swedish or English.

The course is one of three courses in scientific communication that are related to each other. The other courses are Scientific communication I – the Poster and Scientific communication II – the Elevator Pitch
