Chemical kinetics, 6 credits

Please note: This page contains only general information about the course. It does not contain any course material. If you are a student on the course you have to log in to the Canvas portal in the site navigation to find the courses of your programme.

he course syllabus was confirmed by the Faculty board for graduate studies 30 June 2016. The course is in the third cycle and amounts to 6 credits.
The course syllabus is formally approved in Swedish. This is a translation.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, participants shall be able to:

Knowledge and understanding

• Describe the basics of chemical kinetics
• Account for rate laws of reversible, parallell and consecutive reactions
• Describe TS-theory and activation parameters

Skills and abilities

• Interpret experimental data
• Evaluate kinetics data in terms of the rate laws
• Derive the rate law for all types of mechanisms and determine whether they are compatible with experimental data
• Use simple computer programmes to evaluate the dynamic NMR data

Judgement and approach

• To evaluate different mechanisms and judge what experimental data speak in favour of different mechanistic models

Course content

Reaction rates, rate laws, reversible and consecutive reactions, steady state approximation, deduction of reaction mechanisms, transition-state theory, chain reactions, activation parameters, experimental methods, dynamic NMR

Teaching

Group seminars (in total ca 14 h)

Assessment

Assessment is based on the written assignments and the written exam

Grading scale

Possible grades are Pass and Fail. To pass the course, the student must pass the written assignments and pass the written exam.
