Individual reflection task: what can you do in order to develop as an academic teacher?

In the previous section of this module you were asked to identify what matters most in constituting your academic identity, and why. Now, take some time to think about how this relates to your tasks as an academic teacher.

Thereafter you move on to consider how you perceive your role as a teacher and how you might move on in order to develop.

It is a good idea to write down your thoughts, as this will help you articulate them. We recommend that you keep these notes as a memorandum, to return to later. Do not feel restrained that what you note would be anything permanent that will necessarily define you also in the future. Rather, it will help giving you a perspective on your own development.

    • How does what you perceive as the core of your academic identity - that is, what you cherish most and feel is most defining - relates to teaching tasks you are to perform within your academic position? Does it cohere or  is there tension or conflict between how you identify and what you are obliged to do as an academic teacher? What implications might this have for your further development as an academic teacher and how do you relate to it?

    • Do you recognize and identify with any of ways to view teaching and the teaching role suggested by eg. Kugel, Ã…kerlind and/or Fox? If so: in what ways? If not: how would you describe it regarding yourself?

    • How can you proceed in your development? What do you need to do? What kinds of support do you need in order to do this? Try to be as hands-on as possible in pinning down the most important factors.
