Individual reflection task: How does your collegial situation influence you developing as an academic teacher?

How you are able and inspired to develop as an academic teacher is affected by if and how your pursuits are recognized by your colleagues. Take some time to reflect upon your collegial situation and how it affects your development as an academic teacher.

  • In your experience, are your endeavours to develop as an academic teacher appreciated and valued among your colleagues and by your seniors? Are they promoted and rewarded? Are your colleagues showing any interest in your endeavours in this respect?

  • In your opinion, do you have peers with whom you can discuss your teaching and share experiences? Identify who these are and when and how your discussions take place*. Is it enough? Are your discussions rewarding and do they help you to move forward?

If you, at present, lack colleagues with whom you can have such a meaningful and supportive exchange with, are there ways in which you can make it happen within your present collegial context? Try to identify where you might turn and how you might move on in order to find peers - perhaps outside your department? - with whom you can create such a network?
