Dealing with organizational changes and measures
In this section, we will address what happens when we are faced with reforms, policy shifts and other organisational changes that affect how we perform our daily work.
In this video, we present some findings that relate to how academics perceive of and manage organisational change or regulations that may be perceived of as burdensome. When interviewing teachers from different European universities, Teelken (2012) found that the teachers handled administrative pressures either by superficially adapting to new reforms but in reality keeping them at a distance, or by trying to find ways to work around the new regulations. Bamber & Anderson's (2012) study of how teachers evaluate their teaching could be seen as an example of the latter. These teachers often used a variety of qualitative course evaluation methods instead of, or in addition to, the standard university questionnaire. In a sense, they had identified a space where they could work according to their own convictions about good teaching and learning, while still, in a sense, conforming to the regulations.
