Sustainability is the ability to maintain or preserve something over time. It involves finding ways to use resources efficiently and responsibly, minimizing negative impacts on the environment and society, and promoting the well-being of current and future generations.

Sustainable change refers to long-term improvements or shifts that can be maintained over time without causing adverse consequences or requiring excessive resources. In other words, change is environmentally, socially, and economically viable and can be maintained in the long run. Sustainable change often involves the adoption of new practices or technologies that are more efficient, equitable, and resilient and that promote the well-being of individuals and communities. It can also involve shifting social norms and values to prioritize sustainability and long-term thinking.

Sustainability is linked to ideas of open systems, complexity, and non-linear worlds. A non-linear world is a world that is characterized by complex, interconnected systems where cause and effect are not always clear and predictable. In a non-linear world, small events or changes can have large, unforeseen consequences, and traditional linear models of cause and effect may not accurately capture the complexity of the system. Non-linear systems are often characterized by feedback loops, where the output of a system influences the input, leading to complex patterns of behavior. Non-linear systems can be found in a wide range of contexts, including economics, biology, physics, and social systems.

In a non-linear world, events and phenomena do not unfold in a predictable stepwise process. In a non-linear world, traditional, linear approaches to problem-solving are not effective, and it is necessary to adopt more flexible and dynamic approaches to change (and thinking in general). Non-linear thinking involves recognizing the complexity and interconnectedness of systems and being open to exploring a range of potential solutions and approaches. One central idea of this course is to offer a dynamic approach to leadership and change. An approach that recognizes that the key tenets of traditional models for leadership and change – linear causality, control, and power – do not support sustainable change.

In this course, we will use the concept of Wicked Problems as a segue to understanding what change-making requires. A wicked problem is a complex, multifaceted problem. It is difficult to define, understand, and solve. Wicked problems are characterized by a lack of clear-cut solutions, a high degree of uncertainty and ambiguity, and many interconnected variables and stakeholders.

Some examples of wicked problems include climate change, poverty, inequality, and health pandemics. These problems are often "wicked" because they are caused by a wide range of factors and because they are difficult to address using traditional approaches or single-point solutions. Wicked problems require creative, adaptive, and collaborative approaches to problem-solving and often involve the participation and input of diverse stakeholders. This approach to change-making is another main idea in this course.

Wicked problem-solving (or change-making) includes what we might call Dynamic change. This type of change refers to ongoing or continuous change that involves the continual evolution or adaptation of an organization, system, or process. Dynamic change is often characterized by a high degree of complexity, uncertainty, and unpredictability and may involve a wide range of internal and external factors. It can involve adopting new technologies, processes, or strategies or transforming social norms, values, or behaviors.

Dynamic change refers to change that is ongoing, continuous, and often unpredictable. It is characterized by a high degree of movement, flexibility, and adaptability and often involves the ability to respond quickly and effectively to changing circumstances. Dynamic change can occur at many levels, from individual and organizational change to changes in communities and societies.

Dynamic change is different from static change, which is change that occurs in a more predictable, linear manner. Dynamic change is often more complex and requires greater adaptability and flexibility in order to navigate the constantly changing landscape. It often requires organizations and individuals to be proactive, flexible, and responsive and to be able to adapt to new challenges and opportunities as they arise. Dynamic change can be difficult to manage, but it is also an opportunity for organizations to innovate, learn, and grow.

Several strategies can be used to create dynamic change:

Encourage innovation and experimentation: Encourage a culture of continuous learning and experimentation and create opportunities for people to try out new ideas and approaches.
Foster collaboration and partnerships: Collaboration and partnerships can help create a sense of shared ownership and responsibility for driving change and bring together a wide range of perspectives and expertise.
Embrace flexibility and adaptability: Be open to trying new things and taking calculated risks, and be willing to adapt and pivot in response to changing circumstances.
Promote continuous learning and development: Encourage a culture of continuous learning and development and provide opportunities for people to acquire new skills and knowledge.
Encourage a proactive, forward-thinking mindset: Encourage people to anticipate and prepare for future challenges and opportunities and think proactively about creating positive change.
Foster a culture of creativity and innovation: Encourage people to think creatively and develop new and innovative ideas for solving problems and driving change.
Encourage open communication and transparency: Foster open, transparent communication and decision-making and involve people in driving change.

Another concept we will use is Catalytic change. It refers to transformative changes brought about by individuals or groups acting as catalysts for change. Catalytic change agents are individuals or organizations that initiate and facilitate change by identifying problems or opportunities for improvement and mobilizing resources and efforts to address them. They often work to inspire and empower others to take action and create the conditions necessary for change to occur.

The thinking is, of course, taken from chemistry, where a catalytic process is a reaction that is facilitated by a substance called a catalyst. Catalysts are substances that speed up chemical reactions without being consumed or permanently altered themselves. They do this by providing an alternative pathway for the reaction to occur that has a lower activation energy than the uncatalyzed reaction. This means that the catalyst helps the reactants overcome the energy barrier that would normally be required for the reaction to occur, making the reaction happen more easily and quickly. Catalysts can increase the efficiency of chemical reactions, reduce the energy needed to make them happen and produce more desirable products. They are widely used in a variety of industrial and biological processes.

Catalytic leadership involves inspiring and empowering others to take action and make positive changes in their lives and communities. A catalytic leader is someone who has the ability to mobilize people and resources toward a shared vision and who can create conditions that allow others to take ownership of their own development and success. Catalytic leadership often involves being a catalyst for change, challenging the status quo, fostering innovation and collaboration, and helping others develop their full potential. It also involves creating a positive and inclusive culture and being a role model for ethical and responsible behavior. Catalytic leaders are often seen as visionary, adaptable, and inclusive, and they can inspire and energize others toward a common goal.

This is because change often involves a range of complex and interconnected variables and factors that are difficult to predict or control.
