In this course, you will learn how central concepts in solid-state physics can be applied to model physical effects.

The course intends to broaden the knowledge of quantum mechanics from the previous course covering quantum physics (FYSB22) to extended systems with a very large number of atoms. This new understanding is applied on solids, surfaces and nanostructures to learn the basic aspects for these systems. Another important aspect is to give examples of modern electronic and nanometer size components and their influence on the society.

Understanding of spectroscopic methods, how they are used in experimental studies and how they are connected to the activities at MAX IV and ESS are central in the course. The course also gives the opportunity to practise problem-solving by means of analytical and numerical aids, and to write scientific reports.

This course is a mandatory course for all specialisations of the programme Bachelor of Science in Physics.

The course treats:

crystal structure
diffraction and reciprocally lattice
crystal binding
phonons: lattice vibrations and thermal properties
free electron gas
electronic band structure
semiconductors
Fermi surfaces and metals
superconductivity
Quantum Hall effect
magnetism
surface structures and, for simple systems, exemplary numerical calculations of the density of the states
nanostructures and, for simple systems, exemplary numerical calculation of electron transport on the nanometer scale

The course consists of two modules:

Examination, 5 credits
Laboratory and numerical projects, 2.5 credits

Semester: autumn and spring.
Study period: first.
Level: first cycle.
Language: English.
Forms of teaching: teaching sessions, group tuition and supervision in connection with laboratory sessions, computer exercises and projects, study visit to MAX IV and ESS.
Assessment: written examination, laboratory exercises, written lab reports and written self-reflection.
Grading scale: Fail, Pass, Pass with distinction (U, G, VG).
