In this course you will acquire knowledge about different types of accelerators. We will study the function and design of cyclotrons, microtrons, linear accelerators and synchrotrons and how these are used in research, medicine and industry.

More specifically, you will analyse the different components of an accelerator such as different types of electron guns, their pro and cons and sources of particles. The theory of magnets and how they are used in beam dynamics will be described as well as how the theory of magnets is used to build models of accelerators.

There will be an in-depth review of accelerators for synchrotron radiation and different types of free electron lasers (FEL) are described. You will acquaint yourself with the basic components of a major accelerator laboratory along with radiation safety and risks in such an environment.

Entry requirements

To be admitted to the course, students must meet the general requirements for admission to Swedish higher education, have English B from Swedish upper secondary school and 90 credits in science or engineering.
