Contents

Quantum Mechanics is basic for all modern physics. This course gives you a deeper understanding of quantum mechanics that all physicists need, whether you are experimentalist and theoretician. You will learn how to handle typical problems in different fields of physics, such as atomic, nuclear, solid-state or elementary particle physics.

Both theory and applications are treated in the course.

The following is covered in the course:

Formulation of quantum mechanics in terms of general state vectors and operators
Algebraic treatment of the harmonic oscillator (in one and several dimensions)
Angular momentum and spin
Perturbation theory
Outlook on many-body quantum physics

The course consists of two modules:

Exam, 6 credits
Project, 1.5 credits

Semester: autumn.
Study period: first.
Level: second cycle.
Language: English.
Forms of teaching: lectures, exercises and self-study.
Assessment: written examination and project presentation.
Grading scale: Fail, Pass, Pass with distinction (U, G, VG); module 2 includes only scale Failed and Passed.

Entry requirements

Admission to the course requires 75 credits in physics and 45 credits in mathematics including knowledge equivalent to FYSB22 Basic Quantum Mechanics, 7.5 credits and FYSB24 Atomic and Molecular Physics, 7.5 credits, - or a bachelor's degree in physics or equivalent, including knowledge equivalent to FYSB22 Basic quantum mechanics, 7.5 credits. Furthermore is required English 6/B as well as general entry requirements.
