Welcome to the Canvas information page for the course

Basic Quantum Mechanics, 7.5 credits

given by the Department of Physics.

Contents

This course is aimed for students of the programme Bachelor of Science in Physics after they have taken the courses in mathematics and the first block of physics courses with code A. The course is compulsory for your first-cycle studies in physics, no matter what physics specialisation you have applied for. The course is given in English.

This is an introductory course in Quantum Mechanics. You will start with a brief historical background and discuss the basic ideas and postulates of quantum theory. Schrödingers wave equation will then be introduced and you will learn how to solve it for potentials in one dimension, such as wells and barriers. This is followed by concepts and formalism of operators, observables and measurements in quantum mechanics. The course ends by discussing the quantum model for an harmonic oscillator and introducing the hydrogen atom as a basic example of "round", three dimensional quantum mechanics.

The course consists of two modules:

  1. Examination, 5.5 credits
  2. Laboratory and numerical projects, 2 credits
