Add headings to your document

Headings make it easier for everyone to navigate documents

Reading a long document full of text can be a demanding task while learning. Well structured documents help participants to organise and review the text. Through using headings you can add sections and subsections in your documents. Headings can help participants to navigate and understand texts and are crucial for those using a screen reader.

If your document is missing headings the file will have a medium accessibility score.

Resolve the issue in a text editor and upload a new file when you are done. Click on the accessibility score indicator to find out how to do this. Click What this means for an explanation.

Adding headings to your document

You will need to fix the problem in your text editing program. Open up the document, add headings and upload the file to your course. Click on How to add headings for step-by-step instructions on how to do this.

Always choose "Heading 1" for level 1 headings, "Heading 2" for subsections of heading 1, "Heading 3" for subsections of heading 2, and so on. "Normal" is used for paragraph text. You can find specific instructions for the software you are using in the teacher feedback panel and click on How to write good headings for some quick tips.

  1. Click on How to make good headings and follow the instructions
  2. Open the file on your computer
If you don't have a copy of the file on your computer, go back to your course and download the file.
