Seminars online (Conferences or Zoom)

Can you no longer conduct your seminar as planned and need to find an alternative way?

There are many good options if you plan or need to conduct a seminar in a virtual setting. You can use the meeting space both to discuss with the student group at large as well as use the possibility to create break-out groups where student either manually or randomly are divided into smaller groups. In both settings, attendees can see and speak to each other as well as share the content of their desktop (i.e. presentation) or/and collaborate on a document.

It is organised in many ways as a physical seminar. In practice this means that you in the same session can meet your students all at once to give them seminar instructions, then divide them into smaller groups with the task to continue the discussion to finally gather them all in the larger group where they get to present the main points of their discussion.

You can use one of the following resources to do so. Which one you choose is a matter of taste. Both work equally well.

Conduct your seminar via Zoom

In Zoom you can carry out a lecture where you share your presentation or screen with your students. As the host of the event you have the option to record it. In Zoom you can create break-out groups where students can meet and discuss.

Please note that Zoom is not integrated in the Canvas platform. Instead it can be reached with your LUCAT-id through the link below, where you create your meeting and then invite students that attend by sharing a link with them (which you can post via Canvas Inbox or by informing your students through an announcement).

Conduct your seminar via Conferences

Unfortunately Conferences low capacity for eMeetings has made it nearly impossible to start meetings. Our recommendation at the moment is to use Zoom or Teams.

If you have your course in Canvas, you can use the Conference tool to connect to your students and carry out your seminar.  As soon as you set it up, all students are automatically invited. In Conferences you can create break-out groups, upload documents, share your screen as well as notes.

Attention! You might need to activate Conference in your course menu in order to make it visible.
