On Wednesday, October 28, Lund University will host Øresundsdagen 5, a one-day collaborative workshop on how to, and how not to, leverage generative AI in undergraduate mathematics teaching.

The workshop is jointly organised by Mathematics NF at Lund University, Sweden, and DTU Compute at the Technical University of Denmark in Copenhagen.

Focus of the workshop

We provide a collaborative workshop on how to, and how not to, leverage generative AI in undergraduate mathematics teaching. Our aim is to help participants take concrete steps to find pragmatic ways to adjust how courses are taught while protecting the reason they are taught: to provide students with robust and accountable mathematical mastery that is valuable and relevant to society.

To guide the workshop, a combination of short lectures and panel discussions will address three main questions:

Trust and accountability in assessment: How can we design assessments that allow students to use generative AI productively while keeping them accountable for their own mathematical work and mastery?
The role of teachers and collective learning: When generative AI appears able to answer all of a student’s questions, what are the roles of teachers, lectures, problem sessions, and classmates?
What is worth learning: When students can use generative AI to solve problems for them, which mathematical knowledge and capabilities remain worth learning, and what should students be able to do on their own?

Another focus throughout the workshop will be how generative AI is changing the ways mathematics is used in engineering, science and other professional contexts, and what these changes imply for the mathematical knowledge and capabilities students need to develop.

Registration and participation

Registration is open until September 30.

Registration form

In our tradition of crossing boundaries, we aim to attract participants and perspectives from mathematicians, students, educational researchers, and industry partners. In bringing these perspectives together, we hope to challenge the ‘academic echo chamber’ and provide a robust situational understanding at a time when non-experts can outsource mathematical work to generative AI.

Program and practical information

Participants are invited to propose short presentations sharing lessons from adapting their teaching or courses to generative AI. If you would like to contribute a presentation, please indicate this on the registration form.

The programme will run from 10:00 to 17:00, followed by an informal conference dinner. There is no registration fee.
