Important information about thesis submissions during spring 2024
How to submit your thesis in three steps
- Upload your thesis to LUP SP (see instructions below) no later than 11:00 on the day of submission.
- Send your thesis to Ourginal for plagiarism review in accordance with the instructions below.
- Hand-in two printed and stapled copies of your thesis to the thesis administrators.
STEP 1: Uploading your thesis to LUP SP
Upload your thesis to LUP SP no later than 11:00 on the submission day.
- The Faculty of Social Science at Lund University has decided that all theses should be uploaded to a open access database provided by Lund University (LUP SP).
- If the thesis is co-authored with another student, only one copy of the thesis should be uploaded to LUP and linked to both authors.
- If you are having any issues when uploading your thesis, please get in touch with the thesis administrators.
Step 1a: Student account and course registration
To be able to submit your thesis in LUP SP , you have to be registered (or re-registered) on the relevant thesis course and have access to your student account. If you do not have access to your student account you will be unable to submit your thesis. If you have lost your password, you can order a new one from Servicedesk. Please note that it may take up to a week to receive a new password. More information about student accounts can be found on Lund University’s website.
If you are not registered on a thesis course for the correct semester, read more about how to re-register by following this link: late submissions
Step 1b: Submitting your thesis in ONE PDF file
It is important that you submit your thesis in one single file, i.e., the cover page, abstract, table of contents, thesis text, reference list and possible appendices should not be divided into different document files! The thesis should be submitted as a PDF file.
Since you are required to upload a PDF file to LUP, you will need to convert your thesis document to a PDF format. If you already have the commercial version of Acrobat installed on your computer, select ”Print” and choose to print to a PDF file instead of a printer, or simply ”save as” a PDF file. (This might differ slightly depending on if you are a Windows or MacOS user).
Step 1c: Logging in to LUP SP
To submit your thesis, go to LUP Student Papers and log in with your student account. If it is the first time you are using LUP SP, please log in with your student account and update your profile.
The first thing you will see after logging in is a page that shows what course/courses you are registered on. Click on the relevant course name to add your thesis to that course. If you are re-registered on the course, make sure to register your thesis on the current semester (i.e., not the semester when you were first registered on it). Semesters are structured according to a year and a number (1 is for spring semesters, 2 is for autumn semesters). For example, the autumn semester of 2021 is written 20212.
Step 1d: Registering your thesis in LUP SP
When you have clicked on the correct course, a new window will open containing the tabs Work, Publication Info, Context, Files and Access, Additional Info and Message. There are four compulsory tabs that you need to fill out:
- Work
- Publication Info
- Context
- Files and Access
Please keep reading for detailed information about each of these. You can also read more in the LUP Student Papers’ Manual. If you do not have time to complete your registration during one sitting, you can always save your progress, close the window and return to it at a later point in time.
Work
The first tab, "Work", is your description of your thesis with compulsory fields such as author, title, abstract and keywords. You do not need to select a publisher (the Department of Political Science), as this will be done automatically through the course you are registered on.
- Semester: Select the current semester. Semesters are structured according to a year and a number (1 is for spring semesters, 2 is for autumn semesters). For example, the spring semester of 2024 is written 20241.
- Author: Write your name and verify your user identity by clicking on ”Select Author” and locating yourself in the list of registered students. If you are two or more authors collaborating on the same thesis, make sure to add and verify each author individually.
- Abstract: Copy and paste the abstract from your thesis. Select the language your abstract is written in.
- Subject: Select ”Law and Political Science”.
- Key words: Copy and paste the key words from your thesis, You have to have at least three key words separated by a comma (,) or a semi-colon (;)
- Language: Select the language your thesis is written in.
Publication Info
Please write the current year as the year of publication. If you have written your thesis during the autumn semester 2022, you will be submitting your thesis in January 2023 and should therefore write 2023 as the year of publication.
Context
The next tab, "Context" has one compulsory field, supervisor. Fill out the name of your supervisor and click on "Confirm supervisor". Select your supervisor in the list (the name will be linked in blue). If there is more than one person with the same name, choose the person employed at the Department of Political Science (Statsvetenskapliga institutionen).
Files & Access
The last compulsory tab is "Files & Access". It is here that you upload your thesis.
- Click on ”Upload new” and use the file browser to locate your thesis file on your computer. The file has to be in pdf-format.
- After locating your file, make sure to set the desired access level to your thesis document. NB! We use LUP Student Papers to distribute the theses for the examination seminars. For this purpose it is important that you allow your fellow students to access your thesis. So please use access level "Open" or "LU/LTH" for the hand-in. After the thesis seminar you are welcome as the author of the thesis to change to a desired publication level.
- Underneath Copyright Disclaimer, approve the upload by checking ”I accept” and click on ”Submit”,.
Additional Info
If you have additional info about your thesis, for example acknowledging and thanking interviewees, you may add that here. All information that is added here will be publicly available. This tab is not compulsory.
Message
The information you add here will not be publicly available. However, this tab is not used at all at the Department of Political Science. If you have important information for the thesis administrators, please get in touch with them directly via email.
Step 1e: Submitting your thesis in LUP SP
When you have filled out all the compulsory fields under the different tabs, press "Submit Record to Teacher!". This step is absolutely necessary in order to complete the submission process and for your thesis seminar to be scheduled. (The ”teachers” are in this case the thesis administrators at the Department of Political Science). Please note that if you have forgotten to fill out any of the required fields, you will receive a message at the top of your screen in red reading ”Mandatory field (…) is missing”. If all the fields have been filled out, the registration window will close and you will find yourself back at LUP Student Papers’ first page.
You should now be able to see your thesis registration in a list on this page. The list may include several theses registered to the course, but you will only be able to edit your own thesis registration. If all the previous steps have been followed correctly, the status of your thesis should now be ”In Progress”. If the status is ”Private” you have forgotten to click on ”Submit Record to Teacher”. If you have any questions, feel free to contact the thesis administrators.
STEP 2: Submitting your thesis to Ouriginal
Send your completed thesis to Ourginal for plagiarism review by 11:00 at the latest on the day of submission. This is done by sending your thesis as an attachment to daniel.alfons.lu@analys.urkund.se.
You can leave the subject line empty. Ourginal can review both Word documents and PDF files, so it does not matter which format you send your thesis in.
STEP 3: Hand-in your thesis to the thesis administrators
No later than 11:00 on the day of submission hand-in 2 printed and stapled copies of your thesis to the thesis administrators. The thesis administrators check that your thesis is in LUP SP and collect your contact information for distribution of the seminar schedule.
The schedule for the thesis seminars will be sent out via e-mail as soon as the scheduling is completed, at the latest the day following the submission deadline.
