There are several advantages when you use the quiz function to let students write a remote exam:

You can use a more flexible time setting which is useful for part time courses where students have other activities beside their studies. For example, you can use settings to have an exam that is available for several days, but as soon as the student opens it, he/she has only two hours to answer the questions.

When you grade the exam, Canvas checks the points you give for each question and adds them automatically.

If none of these functions are relevant for you, you can use Assignments instead of Quiz to let the students do their remote exam.

The process reminds of an auto-corrected test

The film above shows the whole process, from creating a test to correcting it. For written instructions, please read Randomised questions and question banks in Classic Quiz. They work quite similar.

You want to chose "Graded quiz" as quiz type and probably you don't want the students to conduct the quiz several times or to let them see the correct answers.

Question types

You can use auto-corrected question types for your remote exam, but in addition to those there are two question types where the teacher needs to correct them manually. Both are easy to create since you don't need to add the correct answer or alternatives.

Essay

  1. Question type: Essay
  2. Write down how many points this question is worth.
  3. Add your question here. You can add images and films as well.
  4. Don't forget to update the question.

Grading a remote exam

You grade the remote exam in SpeedGrader. There you will see both the questions and the student's answers. You assign points for each answer and you can add a comment as well.

Extended writing time or extra tries

Some students might have the right to get extended time for their exams. It might happen as well that a student has technical problems during the exam and can prove it in a way that the teacher decides to give an extra try. Both situations are easy to adjust in Canvas.

Moderate quiz extended time.

Click on "Adjust this quiz" so you can see a list for your students. Click on the pen next to a student's name so you can adjust extra time (the time will be added to the time limit you've set) or an extra try.
