Copy a course

Import existing content-button
  

When you create a new Canvas course, you can, for example, choose to copy course content into it from an existing course. Screenshot of a course with the sidebar menu to the right  

On the sidebar menu to the right, click the Import existing content button (1).

  • Select Copy a Canvas course among the Content Type options (2). 
  • Select the course that you would like to copy (3). Note that you can also search for the course number (4) that you download from the URL of the original course.
  • When importing content, you can choose to import the entire course, All content (5), or select Specific content (6) if you want to copy specific elements of a course.
  • You can shift the dates in the course (7). You have the option to set the starting and ending dates for the new course. Canvas will change the imported dates to corresponding occasions as evenly as possible across the course dates. Read more below.

  • Select the content you would like to import, Select content (8), from the following list:

  • Click the Select content button (9).
  • Finish by Importing.

Note the arrows on the far left that show / roll out the content under, for example, Modules.

Shift Dates (1)

  • The dates can be adjusted afterwards, which is easy to do via the Calendar icon.
  • Click the + Substitution button (2) to define conditions for adjusting new dates for e.g. assignments or class schedules so that they do not end up on certain days of the week. 


Adjusting dates on the imported course

Please Note:

  • If you copy a Quiz that is linked to a Question Bank, you must copy both the Quiz and the question bank.
  • After a completed import, it is recommended to use the Link Validation function to ensure the integrity of the material.
