You can randomise questions to minimise the risk of cheating or to give a larger variation with practicing quizzes. It's easy to do – just add equivalent questions to a question group and decide how many questions from the group the students should answer.

There are several ways to work with question groups. It depends on to what extend you want to use randomised questions.

  • Add questions directly to a question group – recommended if you use few randomised questions.
  • Link to a question bank – recommended if you want to use the same randomised questions in several courses.
  • Add questions from a question bank – recommended if you have large question banks and want to choose different questions for different quizzes.

Add questions directly to a question group – recommended if you use few randomised questions

Add questions directly to a question group.

If you only want to use a few randomised questions, the easiest way to do so is to add them into a question group inside the recent quiz.

  1. Click on "New question group".
  2. Name your question group, decide how many questions the students will get and how many points each question in this group is worth.
  3. Click on "Create group".
  4. Click on "+" inside the question group to add a new question. The more questions you add, the larger the variation will be when randomising. Don't forget to click on "Update Question" for every question you create before clicking on "+" to add a new one.

Creating questions banks

If you have many randomised questions, you will have a better overview by creating question banks. You can create them in any of your courses. If you set a name and a bookmark, you can use them in all your courses. I chose to create a separate course that I named "My question banks" where I save mine. By this, I can assure where to find the original.

Question banks.

  1. Click on "Quiz" inside your course where you want to store your question banks.
  2. Click on the three dots up to the right and choose "Manage Question Banks".
  3. Click on "+ Add Question Bank".
  4. Set a name for the question bank and click Enter on your keyboard to save the name.
  5. Click on the question bank's name to open it and add questions. Creating questions works just as in a normal quiz. The only difference is that the button to add a new question is up to the right instead of the centre. As usual, it's important to click on "Update Question" before adding the next one.
  6. You can see that a question bank has been bookmarked if there is a small "x" inside the flag. If the "x" is missing, just click on the flag to bookmark it.

Link to a question bank – recommended if you want to use the same randomised questions in several courses

Linking to a question bank is the easiest way to add randomised questions from a question bank. This is an advantage in case you want to add more questions later so that they are added to the selection as well. At the same time, it's a disadvantage that you cannot see which questions there are in the question bank when you are inside the quiz. If you want to see the questions, you have to open the question bank itself and this can change over time if you add new questions to your bank.

Please note that regardless how many points you adjusted to the questions inside the question bank, you always have to decide how many points they will have inside the quiz.

Question group from bank.

  4. Choose which question bank you want to add.

Add questions from a question bank recommended if you have large question banks and want to choose different questions for different quizzes

For better control you can choose to add your questions from question banks. A copy of the question will be created inside your course.

Question from Question bank.

  1. Click on "Find Questions".
  2. Select one of your bookmarked question banks and mark the questions you want to add.
  3. Click on "Create Group" to add them into a new group.
  4. Name your question group, how many questions should each student will get and how many points each question will give. Then click on "Create Group".
  5. Finally click on "And Questions" to add them into your quiz.

You can add questions from different question banks into the same question group. If you want to do so, you have to repeat step 1-2 and then in step 3, you select the question group that you've created.

Test several times

Test your quiz several times to ensure that it works as expected. You should see different questions for each try. You can test it directly with the Preview-button as soon as your quiz has been finished. If you test in the student view instead, you can reset the student view to start a new try.
