Anonymous grading

Not really anonymous in Canvas

Canvas does not use real anonymity when it comes to handing in assignments. It is for instance not possible to use the anonymity codes that can be used in Ladok and teachers always have the option to turn off the anonymity, and thereby revealing the identities. It is possible however to hide the students' names when you do the grading.

Hide the names of students

There are two ways to hide the students' names before grading:

  • Adjusting the settings for the assignment before the students hand in their submissions
  • Or adjusting the setting in SpeedGrader after the assignments have been handed in

In both cases we recommend that you do the grading within Canvas, not by printing and grading outside of Canvas. The reason for this is that the order of the students could be re-arranged if a student has been inactivated or removed from the course. Although if you download all the assignments as a zip-file, the order of the students should work.

Assignment settings

This settings only works when a Feature option is activated for the course. When inside the course, choose Settings, click the tab Feature option and activate "Anonymous grading":

Anonymous grading Feature options.

When an assignment is being created the settings may be set so that the students' names are hidden for teachers when they enter SpeedGrader.

There is no way of hiding names that have been entered inside the document or in the document's file name. If a student writes his or her name on the front page, in the footer or in the the file name, the document will no longer be anonymous.

The advantage with this setting is that the names are hidden directly as the assignments are being submitted. The setting can be switched on also after students have started uploading their documents.

After grading

After the grading has been done the teachers may change the setting for "Anonymous grading" so that the names will be visible again in SpeedGrader and in Grades.

SpeedGrader setting

If the Feature option isn't activated in the course the names can still be hidden inside SpeedGrader. The disadvantage of this is that a student's name will be visible and shown before the setting has been switched on.
Click on the Settings icon in the left upper corner in SpeedGrader -> Option -> Hide student names in the SpeedGrader -> Save settings

When the setting has been saved all the students' names are hidden, rearranged and replaced with "Student 1", "Student 2", et cetera.

After grading

After the grading has been done the teachers may change the setting under the settings for SpeedGrader. The names will be visible again in SpeedGrader and in Grades.
