Group work - create groups automatically

Create group set.  

  

  1. Click on People in the course you want to create the groups in
  2. Click the +Group Set button
  3. Write a group name, preferably one that describes what the group should work with, e.g. Seminar.
    • Leave A, B, 1, 2, etc. out after the name (Canvas adds a number itself).
  4. Click in "Split students into..." and select/write the number of groups you want Canvas to create.
  5. Click Save. Canvas creates the groups and distributes the students as evenly as possible

 

All groups gets a group surface

As soon as one or more groups are created, a group surface is also created with ready-made collaboration tools for the students to use directly.

 

Visit a group’s surface

 

Visit a group.

  1. Click on People.
  2. After the tab "All" is the group compositions that have been created. Click on any group tab to see its groups.
  3. Click on the three dots next to a group and select "Visit group homepage".

 

Change group or leave the students’ surface

   

Switch group.

  1. Click Switch Group and select another group within the group set to jump between the groups.
  2. Click on the course code to leave a group surface and return to the course home page.

 

TIP: If you wish, it is possible to participate actively in the group as a teacher with all the tools available within the group surface. But keep in mind that for the students it should feel like it is their surface. Therefore, consider minimising your participation in a - for the students - clear and recurring way via e.g. Messages.

 

Where do the students find their groups?

  1. As soon as a student is assigned to a group (or sign-up themself), the Groups button appears in the student's main menu. It is possible that you as a teacher also have that button - in that case it is because you are also a student in a course group.
  2. When a student enters a course, there is also information about this to the right of the course stream: under the header Course groups, the groups that the student is part of for the selected course are listed.
