Open discussion
Latest revision: 2022-01-26
The discussion tool in Canvas is available for everyone in a course. Because everyone can start their own threads you don’t need to make a specific Q&A thread for the course. Ask your students to use the discussion tool if they want to write something to the whole course.
If the course consists of mandatory discussion we recommend that you set them as graded discussions. Then you know who have taken part and you can see and grade all students’ posts individually.
Canvas have a good support for discussions in a group. As soon as a student belongs to a group they get access to an open forum. Teachers can add subjects to discuss that are copied to all groups automatically. Group discussion with an introducing text from a teacher
Discussions can with advantage be used as a Bedömd diskussion

At the page for the course’s discussions you can create new discussions and get help to find the one you’re looking for.
- Click on Discussions
- Find unread posts
- Search for a specific student or title
- Click on +Discussion. Write the post, add an eventual file and click Save.
- To every discussion with more than one answer there’s two numbers. The first one is the amount of unread answers. The other one is the total amount of answers.
On the Dashboard you see at once if there’s any unread posts.
WORRIED IT’LL BE MESSY? We propose that you use the default settings for a while.

If a student gets in touch about something being wrong with a post and that they can’t edit it, it may be because of your settings. You can either change the setting (as above) or edit the post with the problem.
