Use Announcements to share important information with everyone in the course, group or section. As soon as a user log in to Canvas they’ll see clearly if there’re new announcements in a course.

Announcements are suitable for general information for the whole course or one/multiple groups. If you want to send individual messages us the function Inbox.

The function Announcements are located at two levels;

At course level
At group level

At course level

It’s only teachers that can publish the first announcement. The teacher can select if students are allowed to respond or not.

Note! Announcements is not visible in the course navigation until an announcements is made.

At group level

In the group rooms both students and teachers can publish announcements. The announcement is visible for all students belonging in the group, but also for all teachers in the course.

Notifications about announcements

In the setting for announcements (Account —> Notifications) you can set how often you want notifications when new announcements are published.

Settings

Adjust how many announcements you se on the home page

Under Settings you can adjust how many announcements you see on the course’s home page.

Click on Settings
Click on More options at the bottom of the page
Check the box Show latest announcements on the course’s home page
Select how many announcements you want to show
Click Save

Announcements in the course navigation

Under Settings and navigation you select which items will be visible in the course naviagtion. To cahnge thge course navigation you shall:

Click on Settings
Select the tab Navigation
Control that the item Announcements is active

Write a new announcement

Announcement.

There’re two ways to write a new announcement in a course, both ways works the same.

Click on Announcements in the course navigation and then the button +Announcements.
If you’re at the course’s home page you’ll finde the button New announcements to the right.

Announcements are clearly visible for the students

As soon as a user log in to Canvas they’ll see on the course card if there’re any new annoncements. It’s also possible to set how often you want an email with all the new announcements.

For announcements you can choose the following:

Delay posting — Good when you want to prepare information
Allow users to comment
Enable podcast feed
Allow “liking”
