Canvas can show many file types, e.g. Word, PowerPoint, and PDF. This means that the students can choose between downloading the material or see it directly in Canvas.

Upload a file to a module — easiest way for a student to find

How to add a file to a module. Screenshot.

  1. Click the plus-sign inside a module.
  2. Select that it’s a file you wish to upload.
  3. Click on Create files.
  4. Click on Select files and choose the correct file.
  5. Click on Add object.

When you upload a file it will be automatically published and in the module it gets the same name as the file. If you’d like to change the name press the three dots at the same row as the file.

Upload files through Files - practical if they’re many files

How to use files and folders. Screenshot.

  1. Click on Files in the course navigation.
  2. Click on the plus-sign to create a new folder.
  3. Write a name for the folder and press the checkmark to save.
  4. Open your new folder.
  5. Upload the files. If you wish you can drag and drop the files from a folder on the computer.

IMPORTANT! If you add files in this way note that it will not be as clear to the students where they will find them. You may need to tell them to go through Files to find the folder.

Change or replace a file

You can’t edit file that are uploaded to Canvas. Instead you make the changes on your own computer to then replace the file on Canvas.

The easiest way to replace a file is to go to Files in the course navigation. Make sure you are in the same folder as the already uploaded file and that the files you want to replace it with has the exactly same name. You’ll get a question if you’d like to replace the old file or change the name on the new one.

If you replace the file in this way it will automatically replace the file even in your modules.

Note that you can’t do the reverse. If you try upload the replacement file via a module it will automatically gat a new name and the old file will still be there.
