Pages
Pages are simple to work with. It can seem like unnecessary work to build a page when it is som easy to upload files, but you get multiple advantages in comparison with uploaded files.
- Pages load quicker than uploaded files, which is an advantage for your students.
- They adjust the text after the screen, e.g. in a web browser and the app which makes it easier to read.
- If something needs to be changed in the text you can edit it directly on the page. You don't need to upload a new file.
- You can with ease make links on a page that connects it with other materials on the course.
- It's possible to record short videos directly on a page.
- All teachers in the course can update the page.
Make your pages via Modules
You can create pages via Pages in the course navigation, but there they can only be sorted in alphabetical order or by date. To make the pages connect logically it's better to make them via Modules.
- Click on the plus sign in the module where you'd like to add the pages
- Select add page.
- Select that it's a new page.
- Write a heading for the page.
- Click on Add item.
Edit your page
- Click on the page's heading to start adding content.
- Click on the button Edit.
You can write directly in the text box or paste text from Word. More information on how the text editor works can be found on the page Create and edit in the text editor.
Links, images and documents
Links: Canvas makes a difference between Course Links, links within the current course, and External Links, all other links. External Links includes links to e.g. program surfaces and help pages. When you're making a Course Link you get a menu with everything available in the course and you only have to direct the link to the correct material. When you're making an External Link you get a box to paste the link in. External Links opens in a new tab.
Images: You can upload images directly by clicking on the rocket or dragging it into Canvas and dropping it on the rocket. Select Course Images if you want to reuse an image that's already in the course and User Images if the image is on your personal Canvas account.
Documents: You can upload a document directly to a page. As with images, you can choose from documents that are already in the course or on your personal account.
Videos on a page
You can record short videos directly on your page. We recommend you stay under 10 min per video. Click on Insert – Media – Upload/Record Media.
Click Record and make sure that correct Webb camera is chosen. If it´s the first time you make a recording via Canvas you probably must admit Canvas to use the microphone and camera.
Do you have videos on your computer that you want to upload to Canvas? Check first if your institution uses a video portal like Play/Kaltura or Studio. In that case it is better to upload the videos to the portal and then embed them on a page. There is more information about embedded videos in the module Multimedia. Embedded videos make it easier for the students, they can watch via streaming without any downloading. Videos uploaded to the portal doesn´t use any of the file storage for the course.
Don't forget to publish
When the page is done select Save and publish at the bottom right. If you're not finished yet you can select Save instead. If you don't publish the page will continue to be invisible for the students.
Add page to student to-do
With the option Add to student to-do you can set a date when students are recommended to take part in the page. Note that this setting doesn't lock the page in any way. The pages can be opened before and after the selected date. If you'd like to set a time limit on when the students can access the page add it to a module with time limits.
Work with pages together
All teachers in a course can edit all pages (however not at the same time). You can see who has done what by using the page history.
- Click on the dots beside the edit button. (You can in other words not look at the page history and edit at the same time). Select page history.
- You get a list of every time the page has been saved. If you click on a timestamp in the list you can see how the page looked when it was saved. If you think that an old version is better then you can select Restore this revision.
TIP: let the students collaborate on pages.
When you edit a page you can, in the options at the bottom, choose to let your students take part and contribute to the page. The standard setting is that only teachers can edit. Read more on the pages Use pages for collaborative texts
If the students are divided into groups they will have the possibility to create pages in their group spaces. In those spaces, the standard setting is that the students can cooperate and edit pages.
