Which kinds of activities are rewarding for your course?

Laurillard (2012) presents a number of learning activities as building blocks in her concept for Teaching as a Design Science (Links to an external page) Links to an external site.. These activities are being used and developed in the ABC-method (Links to an external page) Links to an external site. with work methods and digital tools in relation to the learning activities. Here Laurillards learning activities are presented with suggestions on how they can be implemented with the tools and objects in Canvas.

Collect knowledge

Students can collect knowledge through lectures, by reading the literature, listening to podcast and demonstrations on campus or in a digital format.

    • Uploaded as a file (e.g. PDF)
    • Uploaded/embedded media
    • Weblink

Collaborate

Students learn through collaborations, joint exercises and discussions. The students' knowledge develops through an exploratory approach. The results are presented in a joint group work.

    • Groups/Group assignments/Group discussions
    • Peer review assignments
    • Comments on hand-in assignments
    • Collaborative documents (demands that the university allows integration with cloud services such as Google Drive or Microsoft 365)

Discuss

In a discussion, the student is encouraged to formulate their own ideas and questions, and critical thinking is developed. The student argues, challenges and give responses to other students and/or teachers ideas and questions.

Explore

Learning takes place by the student examines, explores, compares and critiques text and other resources which mirrors different concepts, models and mindsets.

Apply and practice

When the student applies and practices their knowledge, they're training their ability to take on different assignments and use feedback to improve their performance. Feedback comes from other students, teachers, through self-reflection or through the activity itself.

Create

The knowledge that the student has acquired is confirmed and fortified by the student's own creation. The student is motivated to formulate and express their current conceptual understanding and showing how it can be applied in practices.
