Deactivation of shared LU grading schemes

BroomBucket Now we are clearing out shared LU grading schemes!

All shared LU grading schemes will be deactivated on 11 June 2024.

New way to manage grading schemes

Shared LU grading schemes prior to deactivation 11 June 2024

Going forward, there will be no shared LU grading schemes; these will only exist at the faculty level or below. This change is due to the lack of consensus on how the LU common rating scales should be interpreted at the level of specificity required for use as grading schemes in Canvas

When we introduced Canvas, we tried to cover all variations of the grading schemes used at LU, and a very large number of grading schemes were created and made available to all. It has looked like the picture on the right shows.

This has led to confusion and difficulty in selecting the most appropriate grading scheme.

We have therefore decided to deactivate all of these shared LU grading schemes, and instead leave it to teachers, departments and faculties to create and manage the grading schemes that suit them.

The deactivated grading schemes will still function in older assignments that use them, but they will no longer appear in the list of selectable grading schemes for new assignments, nor can they be linked to new courses

How does this affect me?

  • I am teaching a course right now that has assignments tied to a deactivated grading scheme
    • You don't need to do anything at all. Courses and assignments tied to a deactivated grading scheme can still be used.
  • I'm teaching a course that has a default grading scheme that I've already used on some assignments, and I want to use it on a new assignment
    • Here you need to create a new personal grading scheme with the same content as the deactivated one, or talk to your faculty coordinator about developing a faculty-wide grading scheme that fits. Your Canvas administrator can create a department-wide grading schemes if there are different interpretations of the rating scale within the faculty.
  • I am getting ready to teach a future course which the last time it was given used a grading scheme which is now deactivated
    • When a course or assignment with a disabled grading scheme is copied, it is re-linked to Canvas' default grading scheme. You therefore need to link the course and all assignments to a new grading scheme, either a personal one or one developed by your faculty or department.
  • I have already created personal grading schemes before and only use these
    • You don't need to do anything at all. You manage your personal grading schemes yourself, and the Unit for Educational Services will not touch them.

New grading schemes can be created immediately and placed at the appropriate level, so they are available only to those who need them. A teacher can create a grading scheme for a specific course, while a Canvas administrator can create grading schemes for a department, section, or faculty. Instructions on how to create a new grading scheme can be found on the Grading Schemes page.

Give your new grading scheme a good name!

There can easily be many grading schemes available to a teacher. To make it clear which grading scheme to use, it is strongly recommended to give it a good name.

Name your new grading schemes so it's clear where they belong. This form is good: “UNIT, descriptive name”. A grading scheme that is visible for all at the Joint Faculties of Humanities and Theology can e.g. be called "HT, AE, 50% for pass".
