Information for supervisors

Information for supervisors, Project database

Project 1 (T5) and Degree Project  (T9/T10) have a joint project database where interested supervisors are welcome to submit project proposals. To log in, do so below:

General information

Degree project advanced level (master's thesis) in the Medical Program's term 9 and 10 comprises 20 weeks. The purpose is to promote professional development, school a critical approach and increase participation in clinical work, as well as to increase scientific competence and stimulate interest in research. The essay, including statistics, must be at a level so that the student can perform and understand all parts and orally defend it. Passed examination entails a master's degree in medical science. We recommend that you supervise a maximum of 2-3 student credits per semester.

What are the requirements for the supervisor's competence and employment?

Common rules for supervision of independent work apply within the Faculty of Medicine. The main rule is that the supervisor and examiner must have a degree that is at least one level above the person being supervised. For supervision of independent work for a master's degree, the supervisor must have completed a doctoral degree. The supervisor must be subject-specifically competent in the area the work intends to deal with. The supervisor must be employed by Lund University, Region Skåne or a care provider who has an agreement with the Medical Program/Faculty of Medicine and/or Region Skåne. Senior professors may be supervisors after the exemption application from the head of department to the vice dean. Professor Emeritus may not supervise students. The supervisor shall set aside time for supervision, etc. corresponding to the 50 hours for which compensation is paid. Prior to the submission of the work for examination, the supervisor must approve that the work in its existing form corresponds to the assessment criteria used as a basis for examination. The supervisor should have reviewed the essay so that it meets the assessment criteria before submission on QPS, where it is sent via Urkund. It is important that the essay is not run via Urkund before submission. Further information about the supervisor assignment can be found in the Student-supervisor Collaboration Contract.

What compensation does supervision of a project work require?

Supervision is budgeted at 50 hours and a standard amount of SEK 6,000 is paid for other costs. Payment is made automatically when the thesis has been reported and approved.

Remuneration for supervision refers to the person who is registered as a supervisor within Degree Project, advanced level at the Faculty of Medicine in Lund. This also applies in cases where the supervision has actually been carried out by a person other than Sweden. If the project has been carried out in a country with significantly different economic conditions than in Sweden, the registered supervisor should consider distributing the compensation in a way that reflects the work actually performed.

How can the supervisor reach out with information directly to the students?

The basic principle is that the students themselves contact potential supervisors. To facilitate contacts, projects can be entered into the project database.

For research areas, institutions or clinics that have appointed special contact persons who coordinate the mediation of contacts between students and interested supervisors, it is possible to have these names posted under the tab "Information for students" on this website.

What legal and ethical aspects must the supervisor consider in relation to the student's project?

We are happy to see projects based on patient information (medical records, interviews, etc.). Use of patient data can take place either as a quality project or as a research project. As patient information is sensitive to privacy, there are special regulations that must be followed. Special rules for studies where journal information is used have been constructed by Region Skåne, see ethics. If there is no ethical review from EPM, an assignment from the operations manager is required for permission to carry out the project.

With regard to ethical aspects and ethical review, see Ethical review.
