Course format
How will this work out?
How do I make best use of the Canvas resources?
What do I need?
To successfully follow the course, you need:
- a computer with internet access and a browser and Zoom.
- Matlab & Simulink installed. See info linked from here.
- to be comfortable with the concepts rehearsed here.
- Means to digitize written material (scanner, cell phone camera, web cam, etc.)
If you are lacking any of these resources, please send a Canvas message to Kristian Soltesz.
Sections
The Systems Engineering course (FRTF10) comprises 10 sections. Each section has a Canvas page with:
- Lecture slides
- Reading references for the lecture notes
- Recommended exercise problems
- A quiz for self-evaluation
- Video material corresponding to lectures.
- Extra material, below the horizontal bar on the module page.
The Process Control (FRTN25) course has two additional sections following the same format.
In addition to being available for hard copy purchase at the KFS campus book store, all written course material can be downloaded free of charge from the Course material page.
Lectures
The lecture video material is under development and we appreciate your feedback or requests for format changes! The plan is to produce a series of short videos covering explanation of concepts, as well as demonstrations of how to solve problems using either pen and paper or Matlab. These videos will be posted on the course section pages by the time of the corresponding lecture according to the nominal course schedule.
Exercises
The exercise sessions will be conducted through meetings on Zoom and using the Discussion function here on Canvas. The details for each Zoom meeting can be found on the Exercise sessions page. Each course section has a separate Discussion page. All teaching personnel will regularly try to answer questions posted there. We also encourage you to help each other with answering questions!
Webinars
A webinar in this course is a way for you to discuss the content of the course with each other with the supervision of one of the teachers. Below is a short video presenting the concept. The webinars will be done with the platform Zoom. The schedule and link for the Zoom meetings can be found here or on each course section page.

Hand-ins
You will be able to conduct the labs from home. More info to follow.
Labs
You will be able to conduct the labs from home. More info to follow.
Project
You will be able to conduct the labs from home. More info to follow.
Exam
You will be able to conduct the exam from home. We have not decided on the final exam format, and it might be that you will be allowed to use Matlab for (parts of) the exam. It is therefore a good idea that you get familiar with using Matlab, and we will try to support it throughout the course sections. More info to follow.
Course calendar
Zoom meetings (Exercise sessions, Webinars) and other key events (Hand-ins, Labs, Project, Exam) are catalogued in the course calendar. You can subscribe to the course calendar using iCal or simply view it here in Calendar tab of the Canvas web app. See Subscribe to the course calendar feed for details.
