Getting started!
The course will commence with a mandatory introductory lecture, where we go through everything practical. See the Syllabus for time and location.
Math repetition
Fundamental math repetition of topics central to the course: Problems Download Problems and Solutions Download Solutions. Please make sure that you are comfortable with these concepts by the start of the course.
The problems mainly cover:
- Complex numbers (Cartesian and polar form, simple trigonometry)
- Matrix algebra and eigenvalues
- Integrals (integration by parts, variable substitutions)
Quiz
We would like you all to complete this introductory quiz. The results will be used only internally, and not for grading purposes. What we wish to achieve with the quiz is to get a sense of what the knowledge and experience levels are, as well as what expectations each of you has on the course.
Computer tools
The labs are implemented in the Julia Links to an external site. programming language, utilizing the ControlSystems.jl Links to an external site. toolbox, developed at the department. It shares many of the features of the Matlab Control Systems Toolbox, but comes as free open source software, implemented in a modern and computationally efficient programming language. You will get a brief introduction to Julia and the toolbox during the introductory lab session, Lab 0. For those of you interested to learn more, the tutorials and documentation resources provided through the links above are good starting points. You are also encouraged to use other software with similar functionality, such as Matlab Links to an external site., and its Control Systems Toolbox Links to an external site.. You should all be able to log in here to obtain a personal student copy. A good getting started resource, focusing on Matlab use within the (mathematics and statistics parts of the) course, can be found here.
The computers in the department lab run Linux. You will not need to be an expert user, but some familiarity can be helpful. Here is a Linux cheat-sheet Download Linux cheat-sheet with some of the more common Linux command line commands. You will find plenty of additional documentation online, pick a source that suits your style.
Physical locations
Control

Mathematical statistics
The two first lectures on mathematical statistics will be held online (see the corresponding webpages for the recorded lectures), whereas the third lecture will be held on campus. The computer exercise will be held on November 10th.
