Web accessibility

Lund University's websites are covered by the Act on Accessibility of Digital Public Services (EU Web Directive). Learning platforms such as Canvas are also covered by this. The purpose of the law is to increase digital accessibility for all users, including people with disabilities.

Lund University's joint web accessibility project

The project for web accessibility started April 1st 2020 and will run through until October 2021. The background for the project is that Lund University's web pages, as of September 23rd 2020, will adhere to the Act on Accessibility of Digital Public Services. This means that the content of websites (web pages, documents, video, etc) must reach at least level AA in version 2.1 of the international web standard for accessibility WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines). The following a short summary of WCAG's basic principles for websites:

  • Possible to perceive - Information and components of a user interface must present to users in a way that they can perceive.
  • Manageable - Components of a user interface and navigation must be manageable.
  • Understandable - Information and the usage of the user interface must be understandable
  • Robust - Contents must be robust enough to be reliably interpreted by a wide range of different user programs, including helping tools.

Accessibility report for Canvas

The Act on Accessibility of Digital Public Services also means that there must be an accessibility report on each website that describes how well the website meets the accessibility requirements and contains a function for reporting lack of accessibility.

For Canvas at Lund University, the accessibility report can be found under Help in the global navigation:
