How to create an accessible course
There are a few tips that you can bear in mind when you create content in the Canvas text editor. By following these tips your content will be accessible for everybody.
- Use a font size of at least 12 points. Use the software´s formatting features when you create headings and lists (such as bullet- and point lists) (1).
- Reflect on the amount of text on a page. Use headings and paragraphs to make the text more accessible and easier to read (2).
- Use pages for your documents and links instead of putting them directly in the module. That way you make it possible for the students to use Ally´s – Alternative formats.
- Make sure that all links are descriptive so that you understand where the link leads (avoid “click here”).
- Images are accessible when they have a caption or alternative text. The "alt-text" is necessary to understand the content if images. You can easily fill in the alternative text when you insert an image. Remember to use the “Decorative image” if it is just that, a decorative image.
- Accessible videos have a caption or a complementary text that describes the content of the movie. You can add captions to your videos in Studio. You can also review and edit the captions before publishing.
- If you use figures or graphical elements to convey important information, making those accessible means that the same information exists in text form as a complement. In the same way, you can not only use colour to convey information (for an example: red for something negative and green for positive).
- When working with the text editor there is a button to quickly read if the page and your content are available: Canvas Accessibility Checker (4). It is a good policy to use the checker and control the pages before you publish.
